Version 1.1

Welcome! This document has been created to help you roleplay better in Alleria. Whereas there are rules you must adhere to, this document is only a guide. It will give you tips and hints on how to play the game and to gain the maximum enjoyment from it. This document contains bits from various sites and newsletters, and it is not all one person's work. However, ex-GM Tungro compiled this document.

I will be using the PC name Bob in these examples.

  • Try to write in the third person tense. This means that instead of writing “I walk into a shop and look around” or “I walked into a shop and looked around”, write “Bob walks into a shop and looks around” or “Bob walked into a shop and looked around”.

  • Try to write in the passive voice. This means that you should really use past tense for most things, but you may switch where appropriate. Instead of writing “Bob walks up to the shopkeeper” or “You see Bob walking up to the shopkeeper”, write “Bob walked up to the shopkeeper”.

  • Try to write descriptive posts. Remember that you control your PC's actions, and that includes facial expressions, thoughts, body language etc. If you don't mention it, the other PCs and perhaps the moderator will not know it. For instance, if you do not describe what you look like, how will others know what you look like? And although thoughts tell the moderator and other people what your character's intentions/reasons are, the other PCs and NPCs cannot read your mind! Well, unless they have received mind-reading training IC, they can't... A simple difference can be seen in these two passages:

A dark Elf walked into the shop and looked around. He walked up to the counter and said to the man behind the counter, “I would like to get these things: a longsword and a dagger.”

A tall dark Elf, wearing dark blue robes that obscured his physique entered the shop and looked around at the weapons on display. A lot of weapons here, perhaps I'll find what I'm looking for he thought. His light brown eyes took in the surroundings, and, spying a man behind the counter, strolled gracefully and purposefully towards the man he assumed to be the shop owner. In a deep voice, as if the voice came from the very depths of Telath, he addressed the man. “I would like to get these things: a longsword and a dagger.”

  • Try to write long posts. It's not all about the quantity of posts (the number of posts you've posted) but also quality. This doesn't apply in the same way to the length of posts. Moderators quite like long posts as it shows that you are aware of description and of captivating a reader and of detail. Now don't go off and write three page posts, as people can be turned off having to read many pages worth of writing. A good target to aim for is 1500-2000 characters per post, although do not be afraid to be slightly outwith that range.

  • In all threads in a location in the Allerian Empire, assume whatever you type is in character i.e. it is your character, not the person sitting behind a computer somewhere on Earth that is saying/doing what you write. If you wish to say something yourself (you, not your character), put OOC: in front of it. This means Out Of Character. Try not to put too many OOCs in your posts as they can get annoying. When returning back to your character, write IC in front of it (In Character).

  • Do not bunny! You control your PC and his or her actions – you do not control the world around you, including other players. If you would like something to happen in a thread e.g. you want to find the sword of your long lost brother, feel free to contact the moderator moderating your thread. Then you can discuss it with him or her. If you assume something e.g. you assume that the sword you just found is the sword of your long lost brother when the moderator hasn't said it is, then you have bunnied. You cannot control the world! By all means interact with what the moderator has written – pick up the sword, examine it closely etc. But don't control the world!

  • Start sentences with capital letters and ensure you follow the normal rules for English grammar. Such little things can make all the difference in being thought of as an average person at role playing, or a person good at role playing.

This document, at the moment, is being constantly updated. This means that this is not the final finished document, but as soon as something springs up, it will be added. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep this document for future reference, and keep checking for updates.
